Heat is the constraint, not the light

A July flower order has a shorter life than the same order in any other month. Hydrangea and dahlias wilt visibly within hours out of water in real heat, and a bouquet assembled the night before will not look like the photographs it was chosen from. The fix is scheduling rather than money: late assembly, water tubes on anything carried, a cool holding room for anything standing, and nothing left in a hot car between the shop and the venue.

The same applies to the people. A charcoal or navy wool suit is measurably hotter to stand in for an hour outdoors than a lighter tone in a lighter cloth, and an outdoor July ceremony at two in the afternoon asks a lot of everyone in it. Coral sets July's saturation floor

Coral is the useful reference point for the whole month: if a color has less pigment in it than coral, July light will take it. That is a workable test to apply to every swatch on the table, because the failure is not obvious in a shop and it is very obvious in a photograph taken at one in the afternoon in open sun.

Run it split-complementary and the palette gets two cool partners rather than one, which does something specific in July. Seafoam is a pale blue-green carrying a grey undertone, and in hard July light it reads as deliberately cool and airy rather than as a color that used to be something. It survives by not pretending to be saturated in the first place.

It is also the practical choice for anyone standing in it. Pale, matte, breathable fabric is the coolest thing to wear outdoors in July, and seafoam in linen or cotton voile hides the sweat a shiny pale fabric advertises. Marigold, a color built for exactly this light

Marigold is a deep saturated orange-yellow, and unlike most yellows it does not go pale and weak in strong sun, it goes brighter. That is why it is the color of choice for outdoor celebrations in hard light across a lot of the world, and it is why a July marquee is one of the few Western wedding settings where it genuinely belongs rather than reading as an experiment.

Complementary is the scheme for it: straight against its opposite, maximum contrast, no hedging. A muted July palette in overhead sun tends to photograph as a general warm haze, and a hard complementary pair is the cheapest insurance against that. It also survives being photographed by every guest's phone in bright light, which a subtle palette does not.

The day is already getting shorter, and it changes the timeline

July loses about eighteen minutes of evening across the month, which sounds trivial and is not if your timeline was built from a photograph taken on a different date. The noon sun also comes down from about 73 degrees to about 68 over the same span, the first sustained decline since December, so the very end of July already has a slightly softer midday than the start of it.

The golden window sits at roughly 40 minutes, measured from the sun's centre at 6 degrees up down to sunset, and it lands very late, close to eight in the evening for most of the month. That is after dinner service at a lot of weddings, so it has to be written into the timeline as an interruption everyone agreed to in advance rather than discovered on the night. A July couple who does not plan for that simply misses the best light of their day.

July is a wide market with a heat problem attached. Dahlias and zinnias come into their own with saturation no imported stem matches, garden roses and hydrangea continue in volume, and the domestic sunflower crop starts coming in toward the end of the month. Sunflowers are stocked all year round, so this is about the local field opening rather than the flower becoming available. What July buys you is choice: almost nothing has to be flown anywhere.
