The peony question, answered honestly

Peonies cut in a narrow field window in late spring, and where that lands depends on your latitude and on what the weather did that year. A florist in the mid-Atlantic and one in the upper Midwest are describing different weeks with the same word. Outside the window they still arrive, imported from the southern hemisphere in the autumn and winter months and from Alaska in high summer, at a multiple of the domestic price.

So ask the question with a date attached rather than a season, and ask it early enough that the answer can change your plan. If your May date turns out to sit before the local window opens, the honest substitutions are layered garden roses and double ranunculus, both of which carry the same ruffled volume and neither of which needs to be flown anywhere. A May palette built on the form rather than on the flower name survives a bad spring; one built on the name does not.

Peach, the color a peony already is

The coral peonies are the reason this warm range is the most peony-native color on the page. The American Peony Society's own registry describes Coral Charm as a brilliant penetrating coral that lightens toward pale cream as the petals approach the golden centre, so the flower carries the gradient built in rather than needing anything matched to it. Choosing a warm coral-to-peach range means a substitution to garden roses or ranunculus does not break the palette.

Peach also does something useful with May light specifically. The sun is high enough by now to bleach a pale pastel out, and peach carries enough pigment to stay a color at midday where a paler cream-pink goes to near-white. Split-complementary gives it two cooler partners to sit against, which keeps a warm palette from reading as one continuous orange wash across a long table.

Dusty blue is the cool note a May table needs

By May a garden or a vineyard is genuinely green again, which is a change from every month before it: the venue is now contributing color you did not buy. That argues for one cool anchor rather than more warmth, and dusty blue is the version with enough grey in it to sit against foliage without looking like a nursery.

It is also the most forgiving color of the month for a bridesmaid line, because it flatters a wide range of skin tones and it does not change character between the ceremony outdoors and the reception under warm bulbs the way a saturated blue does. Analogous keeps it in one calm register, which is the right restraint when the venue is already doing the loud part.

Blush at peony peak, pushed off the default

Blush is the obvious May color and that is exactly its risk: it is the default, and a default palette in the most photographed month of spring produces a wedding that looks like the last four you saw. The way out is not a different color, it is a different structure around the same one.

Run blush triadic instead of tonal and it stops being a soft wash and becomes the lead of a palette with two real partners spaced evenly around the wheel. The flower supply supports it in May in a way it does not in March: garden roses, sweet peas, and peonies inside the window all land in this range without a special order, so the ambitious version costs no more than the safe one.

Fourteen hours of daylight, and the first real evening

By May 15 at around 40 degrees north the sun sets close to 8:07pm and the day runs about fourteen and a half hours, which is the first point in the year where an outdoor ceremony, an outdoor cocktail hour and outdoor portraits all fit comfortably in one afternoon without anything being squeezed. The noon sun is around 69 degrees, high enough that midday is now genuinely harsh.

Use the evening rather than the middle. A 5pm ceremony in May leaves the whole warm end of the day for photographs, and it moves everyone out of the overhead light that flattens faces and washes pale colors. The golden window is about 39 minutes at that latitude, taken from the sun's centre at 6 degrees up down to sunset, so name a time for it in the timeline instead of assuming someone will notice it happening.

What May has, and the two dates that move the price

May is the first month where a florist can build almost any palette from domestic supply. Garden roses, sweet peas, ranunculus and, inside the window, peonies are all cutting, and the greenery is free in the sense that the venue already has it. The substitution risk that dominated January through April largely disappears. Lily of the valley is the one to ask about early rather than assume: the local crop starts at the end of April and closes with May, and outside that narrow pair of months it is a Dutch special order every week of the year.

Two dates cost money. Mother's Day weekend, May 8 and 9 in 2027, pulls the retail flower trade into the same week as your order. Memorial Day weekend, ending Monday May 31, is a holiday weekend, which means venue premiums and guests competing with holiday travel for flights and hotel rooms. Neither is a reason to avoid May, both are a reason to pick your Saturday deliberately out of the five available.
